WPPI Trade Show Surprise!

While I was at WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) with a fellow photographer this month, I came across a surprise at the trade show!  The show hosts over 15,000 people from all walks of the photography business and from all over the world.  There are crazy schedules of photography seminars, classes and portrait competitions as well as 2 huge trade show rooms with over 300 vendors!  Needless to say that it is tough to see all the vendors when there are 15,000 people all trying to see them at the same time….can you say sardines!  The trade show is only open 5 or so hours a day for 4 days.  On the last day of the show, my colleague and I did one last trip around the trade show floor – I guess we figured we hadn’t met the 75 lb. suitcase limit with the other tons of catalogs, etc we had already received.  ANYWAY, we happened by one of my photographic album manufacturers booth – not sure why I hadn’t seen them yet.  AND to my delight, there was one of my high school senior albums sitting in their booth – front and center – as a sample.  I felt famous!!  LOL!  It was a satisfying end to a very productive, inspiring ad exhausting week in Las Vegas.

I must not market myself very well….Go figure!!!

Quick story about how well I DON’T promote myself.  I was standing at a sports training sessions and chatting with a friend of my son’s grandmother, whom I have known for almost 3 years now.  We talk regularly at similar sporting events, birthday parties, etc.  Anyhow, she proceeds to tell me how she took her 8 month old granddaughter to get her pictures taken and she wouldn’t smile – not even once!  She then said she was taking her BACK to the same place the next morning for a retake or she wasn’t going to buy any.  Of course I then asked her (kind of indignantly)’ “well, where did you take her?”  Her response was Flash Photography!  She looked at me surprised and said why?  (Well, again, I OBVIOUSLY do a poor job of promoting myself and my work.)  I then ran to my car and grabbed my laptop and proceed to show her my work, told her where my studio was and we arranged to have the granddaughter’s portraits taken the next morning.  To my relief…the little girl smiled like CRAZY!   We even got a few of her 2 year old brother.  It was LOTS of fun, I really enjoyed this session –  and learned a valuable lesson in the meantime!  Here are some previews!  (I even love the pouting one!)

BOY – OH – BOY . . . Fun Portrait Sessions

This has been the week of boys portrait sessions for sure!   I have one boy myself and 2 brothers (no sisters), so I am well versed in dealing with the opposite gender . . . most of the time!  This week of photographing started with the 1st of the most handsome, 2 year old,  blonde boys.  I’ll call him “T”.  Well “T” started off with a bang…because he was in full Blue Jackets garb, including hockey stick and 2 sizes too big hockey skates.  He was in HEAVEN!  I could have photographed him for hours in this outfit and he would have been content.  BUT Mom wanted her boy in a more traditional pose also and……well, I don’t have to tell you, that didn’t go over so hot!  But we quickly distracted him with C-A-N-D-Y and all was well!  Oh No, we are not against bribery here!

2 year old, handsome, blonde boy #2. I will call him “J”.   “J’s” obsession was with animals, specifically horses and cows.  I mean farm animals are his “thing” right now.  I remember when my son went thru the same stage and he just couldn’t get enough.  I have a couple of carousel horse props here at the portrait studio and “J” was in LOVE!  We were hard pressed to get a shot of him without his horse….until we brought out the C-A-N-D-Y.  Mom was close by (as was the horse) and was an excellent photography assistant!  She was quiet and stood behind me and let me get his attention.  When you see Photographs were the kid is NOT looking at the camera, generally its because Mom or Dad are off to the side trying to make them smile.  Here are some sneak peaks of “J”.

Last boy, BUT certainly not least, is “L”.  ”L’s”  Mom and I were introduced 2 years ago by his Big and very special Bro, “W” via an organization I volunteer for called Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep {www.nilmdts.org}.  If you are familiar with the organization, you will know how very special baby “L” is to me.  We had his 2nd portrait session at the Studio last night at 5:30.  And let me tell you, that kid SMILED all the way until 7pm when I reluctantly stopped photographing him!  This kid has the most amazing red hair and looks like his Dad spit him out in the delivery room!  Mom knows better!   What a joy and blessing all children are, but “L” will always be a little extra special for me!  Enjoy the sneak peek and give your kids an EXTRA kiss today from Baby Angel “W”.
